A Memorable African Safari Afloat A Hot Air Balloon With Fabulous Views Of The Savanah Packed With Wildlife.

An African safari is not complete without going on a flight on a hot air balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his wife Joan- wildlife film producers, used a hot air-driven balloon to shoot movie clips of wild animals. It was trouble-free, to use the balloon to access spots where a car could hardly reach, to shoot lovely aerials of wildlife.

After that, the approach attracted the interest of visitors who were willing to pay top-dollar for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Its dawn in the Masai Mara. The cover of darkness is still intense on the dawn and makes the reddish orange flame from the furnace of the hot-air balloon beam vividly bright.

As the sun emerges from behind the mountains, the 100-foot high balloon is adrift above the Masai Mara plains with each one of us lodged in a woven carrier installed on the gigantic balloon.

Simply put, it's seducing! The air currents carry us off trail, above the brink of the Ngama hills and above straight into the Talek River. Directly below, a couple of gray-back Jackals hurry haphazardly amongst the thickets and a hare darts to its underground hideaway.

Afloat, we have a vantage eagle's eye vision of the expanse of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti Parks extending to the extent where the eye can see. It appears endless.

We take 90 degrees spin and below we locate the heads of giraffes through the canopies of acacia bushes as they browse the foliage, scarcely observing us drifting in the air in the sky above.

After approximately one hour adrift, the journey comes to an end and a bouncy landing brings us back to the ground. Here we crawl out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The magnificence is that this breakfast takes place in the wild, wherever you land, and it's made as you watch with the burners that minutes before kept you suspended in the air. What a way to begin our day!

"Through the years, there has been betterment in hot air balloon technology. The furnaces are more effective and quieter than the original balloon safaris" explains the captain.

"One of the things that amazes the majority of first-time balloonists is the absolute stillness, the serenity as you float about the plains, the forest and the rivers of the Masai Mara. The noises below drift clearly up-wards: a lion's bellow, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched on the tops of the trees and shrubs. If you're lucky you will soar high above for the sight of a lifetime. " the captain offers.

After year end rains, the vegetation is lush green as we drive back to our camp observing game en-route. It is such a contrast as these are the same grasslands which, in November, were golden, dried out and hash.

Out of the blue we encounter a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying the area with urine. Once executed, she scans our company and then makes a soft chirping sound as she makes her way through the thicket. Very likely she is looking for her litter.

The grasslands are teeming with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the sight is just wonderful.
